School Masterclass

The ICENI Centre has opened its doors to a new initiative designed to encourage Year 9 school children to visualise a career in the NHS, away from the classroom and in the actual environment that could be their future working life.

The aim of the six-week pilot scheme is for qualified clinical professionals to inspire the next generation around the time they are making GCSE choices and starting to determine their career pathways.

The clinical masterclasses led by professional healthcare workers cover the whole surgical and medical team ranging from anaesthetist, surgeon, scrub nurse, radiographer, recovery nurse and ward nurse.

Alongside the hands-on sessions, ‘Talent for Care’ staff and clinical educational leads are also attending the event to give careers information, advice and guidance.

The ICENI Centre is part of the East Suffolk and North Essex Foundation Trust (ESNEFT) and this latest venture supports the Trust’s mission to play a greater role within the local community.

Two weeks in and the practical classes are proving a hit – ‘he hasn’t stopped talking about it ever since’ was one parent’s feedback who now has an aspiring surgeon on her hands!

Watch this space for more masterclasses that plan to target a wider portfolio for healthcare roles such as pharmacy, physiotherapy, haematology, midwifery and sterile services at Colchester and Ipswich Hospital.   For more information email:
