Professor Tan Arulampalam
Consultant surgeon, Colchester Hospital, UK
ICENI CENTREProfessor Tan Arulampalam has a special interest in minimally invasive pilonidal sinus (EPSIT) and anal fistula surgery, (VAAFT), gallbladder surgery, hernia surgery and colorectal surgery. He has also developed skills in minimally invasive pilonidal sinus (EPSIT) and anal fistula treatment (VAAFT). He also specialises in minimally invasive techniques, using both laparoscopy and endoscopy in many of his procedures.
Mr Greg Wynn
Consultant surgeon, Colchester Hospital, UK
ICENI CENTREMr Greg Wynn is one of the directors of the ICENI Centre and has interests in teaching and training, including virtual reality simulation for assessment of technical skills. His other interests are in colorectal cancer and natural orifice surgery, particularly organ preservation and management of the complete response to neoadjuvant therapy in rectal cancer. He has developed and implemented transanal total mesorectal excision (TaTME) at Colchester since 2012 and is faculty and trainer for the TaTME national training programme.
Mr Bruce Sizer
Consultant Oncologist, Colchester Hospital, UK
ICENI CENTREMr Bruce Sizer currently leads the Cancer Research Dept at Essex County Hospital, recruiting over 500 patients to national and international studies in the last ten years.
Mr Sizer is a Principal Investigator in several studies in collaboration with the Royal Marsden Hospital in new chemotherapy drugs in prostate cancer and chemoradiotherapy in rectal cancer, with colorectal surgical colleagues at the Iceni Centre and the Postgraduate Medical Institute at Anglia Ruskin University.

Professor Roger Motson
Consultant Surgeon, Colchester Hospital, UK
ICENI CENTREProfessor Roger Motson has been performing laparoscopic surgery since the mid 1980s and was appointed Consultant Surgeon at Colchester General Hospital in 1984. He has developed techniques for laparoscopic common bile duct exploration and incisional hernia repair and has extensive experience of laparoscopic upper gastrointestinal, hernia and colorectal surgery.
Professor Motson has led the drive at Colchester for a multi-disciplinary education centre, running laparoscopic courses in Colchester since the early 1990s, as well as teaching laparoscopic surgery both in the UK and abroad.

Professor Gina Brown
Professor of Radiology, Royal Marsden Hospital, UK
ICENI CENTREProfessor Gina Brown pioneered the investigation of imaging prognostic factors such as extramural vascular invasion colon and rectal cancer and implications for patient outcomes. This led to identification of key imaging predictors of patients at risk of developing metastatic disease now being targeted for treatment in NCRI phase II/III trials.
Professor Brown developed staging criteria in colon and rectal cancer and standards for reporting that are now adopted globally. She initiated and developed the UK Deferral of Surgery trial protocol for rectal cancer patients in response to patients’ desires to avoid permanent stoma and defined the post-radiotherapy MRI criteria to identify complete responders eligible for avoidance of surgery.
Dr James Kinoss
Consultant Colorectal Surgeon, Imperial College London, UK
ICENI CENTREDr James Kinross is a consultant colorectal surgeon, at St. Mary’s Hospital London. His clinical interests are in minimally invasive and laparoscopic surgery for the treatment of colorectal cancer. He also has an interest in surgical nutrition and modulation of the gut microbiota by pro and prebiotics for improved operative outcomes.
Dr Kinross is involved in clinical trials using intra-operative mass spectrometry (known as Real-time Electrospray Ionisation Mass Spectrometry or REIMS) for improving precision in the surgical treatment of colorectal cancer.
Mr Fraser Smith
Consultant Surgeon, Royal Liverpool University Hospital, UK
ICENI CENTREMr Fraser Smith works at The Royal Liverpool Hospital and Spire Liverpool Hospital. He is highly experienced in investigating and treating rectal bleeding, colonoscopy and the treatment of haemorrhoids. Additionally he has been involved in pioneering new surgical techniques aimed at improving the outcome for patients.
Mr Smith was one of the first wave of surgeons in the UK to complete training in and perform transanal TME surgery for rectal cancer. He also has a specialist interest in surgery for rectal cancer that can help patients avoid a permanent colostomy bag.
Ms Claire Taylor
Macmillan Nurse Consultant in Colorectal Cancer, LONDON NORTH WEST UNIVERSITY HEALTHCARE NHS TRUST
ICENI CENTREClaire Taylor is a Macmillan Nurse Consultant in Colorectal Cancer at London North West Healthcare NHS Trust. Claire specialized in colorectal cancer nursing 20 years ago. Her current role includes supporting patients having complex colorectal cancer surgery, nursing lead for the consequences of colorectal cancer treatment service and developing effective and sustainable interventions across the Trust for people living with and beyond cancer.
Claire chairs the National Nurses Colorectal Cancer Network and is a steering group member of several other committees including the CREW study, Transforming Cancer Rehabilitation across London, RM Partners’ Survivorship Pathway group and Cancer Nursing Partnership.
Claire was recently awarded an MBE for her services to colorectal cancer nursing.
Mr Ian Daniels
Consultant Surgeon, Royal Devon & Exeter Hospitals, UK
ICENI CENTREThe majority of Mr Ian Daniel’s practice is specially delivered care in colorectal disease, complications of surgery and reconstruction following intra-abdominal complications and patients with recurrent and/or locally advanced bowel cancer.
He also has other interests in academic surgery and co-leads the Exeter Surgical Health Services Research Unit.Through the work that they do, both research and live surgical workshop training he has developed a national and international reputation for abdominal wall reconstructive surgery.
Mr Myrddin Rees
Consultant General & Hepatobiliary Surgeon, Hampshire Hospitals, UK
ICENI CENTREMr Myrddin (Merv) Rees is a Consultant Hepatobiliary Surgeon at the Hampshire Hospital Basingstoke. His surgical training was completed at St George’s Hospital, London and included two years as a Research and Clinical Fellow at the Oschner Clinic, New Orleans.
Over the past 30 years he has established liver resection as a routine procedure, and has personally performed or been involved with over 2000 liver resections. He is past President of the Surgical Section of the Royal Society of Medicine, and past President of the Association of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland. He has spent 10 years as Medical Director of Surgical Services at the Hampshire Hospitals Trust, and currently as Medical Director for Clinical Improvement.
